CHAPTER 17

Wy!

Wynona jerked upright in bed. “What?” she asked, rubbing her eyes.

Wy? Where are you? Rascal demanded.

“I’m at home,” she muttered, swinging her legs over the bed. “Why are you waking me up at...” Wynona glanced at her clock. “Three o’clock in the morning?”

The pounding on her front door had her grabbing her robe and rushing to open it.

“What are you doing?” she asked as Rascal rushed in and wrapped his arms around her.

“There’s been another killing,” he said through heavy breathing.

From the windblown scent of him, Wynona was sure that Rascal had run the whole way to her house in his wolf form. She reached around him and let his protective wolf hold on. “Who died?” she asked softly.

“Eve Guanaco.”

Wynona gasped and leaned back. “Another one of the Original Five?”

Rascal nodded and pushed both hands through his hair, tugging tightly. “No one was sure about the first death. Whoever left the device could have been after the fiance or Thathion, though he was the more likely suspect. But now we’re certain.” His eyes flashed gold. “Someone is killing The Five.”

Wynona tugged her robe tighter around her, suddenly feeling chilled. “It was Mr. Thathion.”

“Wy...” Rascal let his head drop back. “He was in the hospital. A dozen nurses and staff can vouch for him.”

Wynona shook her head and waved a finger at Rascal. “I’m telling you, he’s involved! There is something wrong with that man. I don’t know how you can’t feel it.”

“Okay, okay.” Rascal put his hands up in a placating manner. “I hear you. But Wy...I have no proof. Do you have any idea what the chief would say if I showed up at the hospital to arrest Thathion? Chief would think I was completely out of my fur.”

Wynona sagged into his chest. “I know,” she muttered. “But I still think he’s evil.”

Rascal chuckled and Wynona bounced against him. “You don’t like him. Understood. I don’t like him either. But that doesn’t make him a killer.”

Wynona huffed. She raised her head. “Why were you so afraid? You don’t usually wake me up for every call in the middle of the night.”

Rascal sighed. He didn’t answer right away and it gave Wynona long enough to come up with an idea.

“You thought I wasn’t safe with Lusgu,” she said softly.

Rascal hesitated, but ultimately nodded.

Wynona stepped away. “I can’t believe you think he would hurt me,” she cried.

Rascal scowled. “Think? He already hurt you. Do you not remember how your magic reacted to him? It was completely defensive!”

“He’s promised to train me,” Wynona argued. “Is that the actions of a person who would hurt me?”

“He’s not himself at the moment,” Rascal insisted. He took Wynona’s hands and held them tightly. “Only a couple of weeks ago I wouldn’t have believed him capable of it, but I’ve watched him nearly kill us all.” Rascal shook his head. “I don’t trust him.”

“He’s hurting,” Wynona whispered hoarsely. “He’s hurting and it’s causing him to lash out.”

“He’s an adult,” Rascal snapped. “And if what we’ve gathered is correct, he’s an adult several centuries over.
